Adriana Asthmatika

It's that time of the year again. When the weather gets erratic I start whipping out the nebulizer and the masks just in time for our regular bouts with asthma.

My youngest kid, Adi, was diagnosed with asthma at a very young 8-months old. The routine is all too familiar. It starts with a sunny day which morphs into a rainy afternoon. The sudden change in humidity causes us to feel unusually sticky but in Adi's case this is the pre-cursor to an asthma attack. It can vary from a slight cough to a full-blown, vomit inducing attack. Sometimes it sounds like a constant "samid". Sometimes it sounds like a tiny pussycat purring simultaneously with her coughing bouts. In both cases, it still is an asthma attack.

Now that she's 2-years old, she's already a veteran when it comes to asthma treatments. You name it, we've tried it. I've consulted 4 doctors for her condition. All conclude that it isn't really that bad but we still have to take extra precaution. Her's is the kind of asthma that can be overcome at an older age given the right treatment. It took a while before we found the right combination of medicines to give her whenever an attack happened. It's a common joke among us that when we hear the familiar drone of the nebulizing machine we say "Tumitira na naman si Adi." And just to make it less of a chore, we call the nebulizer the "Choo-choo train". Nebules, antibiotics, steroids, ampalaya..Adi's done it. The only things we haven't tried are dried sea-horse and lizards.

Aside from pharmaceuticals, we have also resorted to running to the breakwater, Subic, or Tagaytay whenever we foresee an attack coming. Some of the elders profess that sea-air or mountain air at dawn is the best cure for asthma. I have not questioned or researched on this anymore. I just heed this advice like I would the Gospel. So far, it seems to have worked. Plus we get to have fun on the side.

My son, Julian is like that too. Has asthma attack at 3am. Now, more than ever, attacks come almost daily. We've been to two doctors. One (adult pulmo from LCP) wants to have a daily maintenance while the other one (pedia pulmo from PCMC) wants as needed meds.

Good luck to us. And the lizard and sea-horse, I might be tempted to do just that, lol!

I'm very thankful na walang asthma ang 3 kids ko and I feel very sympathetic with parents like you. It makes parenting even more challenging...

Hugs to Adi! My son Nate also has cough and colds. It's the weather-sobrang sama, init-lamig. We have a nebulizer on standby too, will nebulize tonight nga pala so he (and I!) can sleep soundly naman.

am sure adi is already a real trooper when it comes to her attacks, kids easily bounces back, di ba! my 5 year old kid has hereditary spherocytosis, and that's not only a mouthful but requires blood tests every three month, but she's a happy child!

Aaaaww, poor Adi! My oldest son has asthma too and he has inhaler with him all the time. So I can sympathize with you. When we campind by the beach though he didn't cough or wheeze at all.

I've heard of the lizard when I was younger. Apparently, my Lola used it for one of my uncles and they said it worked.

Hi Julie!! The attacks were like that before. We would be nebulizing round the clock because she would have an attack at the most ungodly hours. It's a bit better now because the meds we use are stronger and she's "hiyang"' na with them. Hope your Julian is better now.

Hi Pepe!! Thanks for the visit. Thanks too for your concern. Be very thankful that your kids don't have asthma. It's hard for both the child and the parent.

Hi Chateau!! Hay naku, it's really this freaky weather that's responsible for Adi's attacks. One pedia said na ikulong ko na lang sa airconditioned room para constant na ang temperature. Kaya ayan, si husband trabaho to death para may pangbayad ng kuryente..hehehe.

Hi Raqgold!! Wow, that is a mouthful. I looked it up, is it very bad for your kid? I pray that she gets better.

Hi GreyMom!! How hard no. When you have a kid with asthma, lahat dapat planado. We've learned to live with it and be prepared for an impending attack. Ganun talaga...weather weather lang.

Poor Adi! Wawa naman...

Sana wag magkaganyan si Deye ko, dito pa naman super duper weird ang weather!

Di na ba gumagaling ang Asthma?

My kids have asthma too and allergic rhinitis even. Their maintenance medicine eats a chunk of my monthly budget (nasal sprays)but it's okay, so far the attacks are lesser now.

hi -- unfortunately, this wont go away kasi she inherited this condition from the papa's family side e. there's 100% chance that it might be passed to the next generation, too. at least the whole family knows na what to do, life goes on :-)

we bring our daughter to the sea or the mountains for her to be able to breath fresh air as much as we could - malayo nga lang kami on both sites.. she's not asthmatic but it's always good for kids to breath natural air di ba..

Hi Mitch! Talaga, nakaawa siya pag nahihirapan siyang huminga. It's better now but I made her skip school just to have her rest a bit more. Sabi ng pedia pwede daw ma-overcome.

Hi Ami!! Thanks for the visit. Amen on your comment. The meds are so expensive. She's now on steroids. I tried buying the cheaper brand of meds but they're not as effective. In the long run you end up spending more.

Hi Raqgold!! Hopefully your child can still continue to do the activities she wants to do despite her condition. All the best :)

Hi Analyse!! You're very right. Even if Adi didn't have this condition, we'd still be taking her (and Gaby too) out of town as often as possible. The air in Manila is so bad na. I'm pretty sure this is also a big factor. Buti sa inyo di pa masyadong polluted. Dito, grabe na!

Wawa naman! Hay, my sister has 5 kids and they all have the same problem! I always feel so bad when I see them with their nebulizers. It's the quality of air around us, it's horrible.

Hope the asthma attacks get few and far in between. Or hopefully she will outgrow it. I think it's the air quality that we have nowadays. I didn't have asthma as a child. Just had it when I was in my 30s.

Hi Christine!! It's the pollution!! You can actually see it on a clear day, di ba. Hey, I am so looking forward to your next series :)

Hi Angel!! My pulmonologist (I have rhinitis) told me that adult asthma is so prevalent nowadays. And yes, it's because of the air quality. It really is so bad!

naku, Cookie, so sorry to hear about Adi. i hope she's OK now. a mother's caring is always the best source of strength of our kids.

May nebuliser din ako. Talagang bumili ko sa Pinas at binitbit ko dito. Life saver.

I hope she outgrows her asthma. My childhood was quite miserable due to asthma. Lumobo ako dahil sa steroids as in higanteng mukha talaga. Hanggang ngayon I've got big, droopy cheeks (ok lang cute naman haha!).

Sana, sana ma-wala din yung kay Adriana.

ScroochChronicles said...

Hi Feng!! Thank you so much for the good wishes. So far, medyo controlled na yun attack niya. She went back to school yesterday but is still having some coughing bouts at night.

Hi Auee!! Uy, nice to have you back!! Talaga you grew up with asthma? Na-overcome mo ba? Adi's pedia said, kasi, na by around 7yrs old pwedeng mawala daw. How about you, what happened?

KK said...

Kawawa naman si Adriana. I used to be asthmatic too. She is so young. I think I got it by age 7. By age 12, this nice lady gave supplied me asthma medicines- I can't even remember but it made me very sleepy. I don't know what did it but I outgrew it. I hope she doesn't get too many attacks.

ScroochChronicles said...

Hi KK!! Ano kaya yun meds na binigay sa iyo? Now we're on steroids so her attack has been controlled a bit. Sana nga she can overcome this :)
